Hideaway in the Hills: A Mountain Vacation - Day Five

Hi there!  I'm catching up on some 'back dated' entries that I have saved as drafts in the background/editing area of the blog.  Might as well tidy up a bit while I'm poking around!

love and kisses,

Day Five of our trip, February 26, 2014...and it appears that we either didn't do much this day OR I didn't take any pictures OR I just forgot!!!

Anyway!

Have you seen the movie Dirty Dancing?  It was shot in and around Lake Lure.  Remember that scene where Baby runs across the golf course to ask her dad for money?  Well...that would be the green (okay, brown cause it's winter) right there in the center of these pictures.  The resort we stayed at offers special tours during the summer to all the movie fans who turn up wanting see the movie locations.

Lookit!

Six years ago today I started a blog because everyone I knew was blogging and I'm totally one to cave in under peer pressure.

Six years and 850 or so posts later Blissfully Unaware is still here.

The layout, background, color scheme, and line up of followers may have changed over the years, but I'm still here.

So, Happy Anniversary to you, Blissfully Unaware.  Thanks for being my ever trusty sounding board here in this little corner of the internet.

Love, HistoryDiva

*Yawn*

Know what I haven’t seen in forever?  One of those silly surveys with pointless questions.

What happened to those?  Did they fall out of fashion?  These things used to plague my work inbox but I’ve seen nary a one in several years.

Perhaps this is a good thing, really.

But…I’m bored today.

So, I’m totally recycling one from the bowels of the blog (2008-ish).  Let’s see how things have changed.

About Me 2013

1. What time did you get up this morning?  6:05 AM, which is when the second alarm went off

2. Diamonds or pearls?  Diamonds

3. What was the last movie you saw?  At home: Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows – in the theater: I don’t remember…I know it was animated…something TiaDiva wanted to see

4. Where is the most beautiful place you've ever been?  New River Gorge, West Virginia

5. What do you usually have for breakfast?  A to-go mug of hot tea

6. What is your favorite food?  Chinese

7. What food do you dislike?  Anything fried *ugh*

12. Favorite item of clothing?  My new ‘snow sneakers’ from LL Bean – they keep my toes warm and have good grip on slippery ground

13. If you could go anywhere in the world for a vacation, where would you go?  Tough call…there is so much of the world I would like to see…but right this very moment the greatest place in the world would be a little cabin in the woods where I could spend a week reading and cross stitching in front of a cozy fire while drinking lots of tea and having NO ONE bother me.

14. What color is your bathroom?  Blue

15. Favorite brand of clothing?  I can’t afford clothing that has a brand…but Hanes comes to mind.

16. Where would/will you retire?  I would like to retire to a Pacific Island...I’m thinking about New Zealand.

18. Favorite sport to watch?  The Olympics – both summer and winter

19. When is your birthday?   In October

20. Are you a morning person or a night person?  I was such a night person in college it wasn’t even funny…and I still stay up way too late sometimes.  I’m not a morning person but I’m no longer a staunch night owl.

21. Pets?  One cat, one roommate

22. What did you want to be when you were little?  Something new every other day…but mostly a teacher.

23. What are you today?  Customer Service Representative Extraordinaire

32. What is under your bed?  The cord for the electric blanket and the cat’s collection of used dryer sheets

33. Who is the friend you've had longest?  Ummm…well, let’s see…I’ve known TiaDiva for 30 years, the Weird German Girl for 16 years, the HOPSF for15 years, the LibraryDiva for 8 years

A WanderingThought

Back in the 90s, when the Furby was originally launched, a friend of mine bought one.  She tired of it quickly and happily passed it along to her mother, who was very taken with the endlessly squawking bug eyed toy and the Furby promptly took up residence on the coffee table in this friend’s living room, where it and her mother (who was unemployed) would spend their days chatting.  The electronic soul sucker had soon dropped all traces of its original ‘Furbish’ language in favor of a slightly ‘southern-fried’ vocabulary instead.  It also became enamored of the family’s cordless phone, which sat beside it on the coffee table all day…to the point where it began to mimic the cordless phone’s ringtone.  Additionally, though I never saw them in the house, the demon toy also latched onto the word ‘banana.’  At random intervals this possessed possession would launch itself into a fit of maniacal laughter, ring like the telephone several times, and round out the performance with an ear splitting chorus of “BANANA BANANA BANANA!!!”  Which was mildly annoying when it happened during the dinner hour…but was totally unsettling when it occurred at 3:00 AM.

Somehow this particular item ended up getting run over by a semi- truck in the drive way…an incident about which I may or may not have additional knowledge.

Random Un-Reality Awesomeness

Good morning!

How’s Friday treating everyone?

Me?  I’m in an excellent mood today.

And here’s why…

Now, normally I don’t write down my dreams…because they are usually just too strange to bother remembering (trust me).  But last night’s dream was quite the exception and I just have to share….so here you go.

I was vacationing in a small Welsh village, staying in a lovely little cottage.

Everyone was very friendly and welcoming.  My next door neighbors were a very nice young couple, and you will never guess who they turned out to be…Wills and Kate!

Yep, I was totally the next door neighbor of royalty!  And they were every bit as lovely and friendly as I imagine them to be.  (Well obviously, since this was a dream…)

Now, just to make this dream even more entertaining, who should come for visit but Prince Charles himself??

Cause if you’re gonna dream about royalty you might as well have BOTH future Kings of England put in an appearance.

I managed to score an introduction and we had a really wonderful chat about organic farming (which is one of Charles’ favorite topics, btw…thanks for the info PBS!).  Well it turns out that the Prince was in the area on an official visit to the local military base where he and William would be flying one of their new gigantic planes.  So after asking several amazingly intelligent questions about aviation (weirdly, I somehow knew that everything I asked was actually relevant and correct and in reality I know exactly SQUAT about planes) he invited me to tag along the next day and go with them on the demonstration flight!  And OF COURSE I said yes!  So there I was, in my little RAF flight suit, sitting in the cockpit of a gigantic military plane being piloted by the two future Kings of England.

Needless to say, I woke up in a FANTASTIC mood!

You just gotta love how my brain works sometimes.

Brain Droppings

…some random thoughts about random things for a random Tuesday.

You know what’s weird?  Cats.

You know what’s not fun AT ALL?  When your indoor cat gets fleas.  For no apparent reason.

Books:  Lately I just can’t seem to settle into a book, no matter the topic.  It’s very normal for me to have several books ‘going’ at the same time and while I flit from title to title (a bit like a hummingbird) I tend to settle on one for a day or so at a time and finish them off pretty quickly.  But lately, no dice.  I find this annoying.

Music:  Dear Adele, please stop getting stuck in my head.  Seriously, you’re on infinite loop inside my brain at the moment.

Brain “…when will I see you again?...You left with no goodbye, not a single word was said…”
Me: GAH!!!  Trying to WORK out here!!!

TV:  Currently going through another one of my “I’m so tired of this show” phases (sorry, SYTYCD, you’ve been voted off the island).  The only thing I’m really making time to watch is Doctor Who (Season 7!)…seriously, nothing else holds my attention these days.  Copper, a new period crime drama on BBC America, is absolutely fabulous…but I’ll admit that I’ve been catching it in reruns rather than staying focused on Sunday nights.  I’ve run through all of The Big Bang Theory (excellent show, btw) on DVD, and OH!  I just got Season 1 of Once Upon A Time (also excellent TV).

Bananas are good.

I haven’t figured out what I want to have for lunch today.

We get a lot of phone calls from wrong numbers.

That’s really it for now…

Busy Whining

So far this year has not gone as planned.  For example, I was gonna be all 'wordy' and 'update-y' and crowd my blog space with posts stuffed full of deep thoughts and astonishing insights.  Instead, I lost my sight and went under the knife...TWICE.  *sigh*

See?  This is what happens when you attempt to 'have a plan' for the future...no matter how short of a time span that 'future' might be.  Say...a year. *another sigh*

So here I sit, in my pajamas in the middle of the day, writing a post about nothing.

You jelly?

A Random Thought

...to get 2012 off on the right foot.

I think someone needs to create a super tasty spreadable cheese (or something similar) and label their awesome product "Christ."

Why?

Because "Christ on a cracker" has become my go-to expletive lately.

"Blasphemy, Blasphe-you, Blasphe-everybody-in-the-room."

Because it is a rainy day...

Clouds

Gently falling rain, falling from the sky,
Streaming down like tear-drops, tear-drops from on high.

Clouds, oh won't you tell us what those tears are for?
Do you weep for something, something we've ignored?

Could it be that from your lofty post so high above
You have seen how little we have given of our love?

Do you see the lonely, weary, troubled and the poor?
Have you seen the fighting and the war?

Clouds, there must be some way to make your crying cease.
Share with us the secret of happiness and peace.

Do you mean to say that each of us can play a part?
With each spark of love we light, a flame of love may start.
Reaching all around us, giving hope to those we know;
This, you say, will help true peace to grow?

Clouds, though you are parting, your point you've made quite clear.
Peace will never happen unless we start it here.

- Cynthia Gray
I remember singing this at some point in my school choir 'career'
...and it came to mind today.
